Having worked with Cardiff University for over 20 years on redevelopment and refurbishment projects across their estate we were directly appointed to develop their Employer’s Requirements to RIBA Stage 3 for this £10M new building adjacent to a main railway line into Cardiff city centre. The whole design team were then novated over to the successful Design and Build contractor, ISG along with Whitehead Building Services, to develop the detailed designs.
We worked with Boyes Rees Architects, Shear Design and Bingham Hall Partnership structural engineers to design an energy efficient building which maximized the potential for natural ventilation while also providing the internal acoustic environment needed for a class leading teaching facility.
We developed a “double skin” ventilated façade for the main elevations facing the railway line which allow conventional opening windows to be used when weather conditions allow while minimizing noise impact from passing trains. When the weather conditions are not suitable the windows can be kept closed and the energy recovery displacement ventilation systems maintain the internal environment with the minimum possible energy use.
A gas fired combined heat and power (CHP) unit is installed to generate electricity for use in the building with the waste heat used in the ventilation system.
The lighting throughout the entire building uses LED light fittings with daylight and occupancy controls, a first for Cardiff University at the time.
All the mechanical and electrical services systems, the natural ventilation and the energy monitoring are integrated into a Building Energy Management System (BEMS) which can be monitored remotely from the Estates team office.
